The 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival, themed “A Homecoming of Heritage,” brought music, colour, and cultural pride to Lagos Island on Easter Monday at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS). The annual celebration honours the legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnees, known as the Aguda, who settled in Lagos in the 19th century.
Highlights of the festival include:
- Colourful Processions: Communities such as Campos, Lafiaji, Isale-Eko, Olowogbowo, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, and Epetedo showcased traditional costumes, beads, feathers, sequins, and fabrics.
- Music & Performances: Top Nigerian artistes—Niniola, 9ice, Terry Apala, Teni, and Reminisce—entertained crowds with high-energy performances, featuring hits like Niniola’s Maradona and Teni’s interactive set.
- Inclusive Celebration: The Disability Pride Movement participated, highlighting that culture and heritage are for everyone. Children living with disabilities actively joined the parade, promoting awareness and inclusivity.
- Cultural Preservation: Community leaders, including Mayegun Owolabi of Lafiaji, emphasised the carnival’s role in preserving Lagos’ Afro-Brazilian heritage, fostering unity, and reinforcing identity across generations.
- Economic & Heritage Summit: Prior to the carnival, stakeholders gathered at Glover Memorial Hall to discuss cultural festivals’ economic potential, heritage preservation, and Nigeria-Brazil relations.
The 2026 Fanti Carnival successfully combined history, tradition, music, and community spirit, affirming Lagos as a vibrant, inclusive, and culturally rich city.
