FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the arrest of the developer responsible for a two-storey building that collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja on Friday. He also directed the seizure of the land for public use and warned that all involved in the illegal construction would face prosecution.
Speaking at the site, Wike revealed the building was constructed without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control, despite repeated stop-work notices issued to the developer.
“Despite the lack of formal approval, the company proceeded with construction, leading to the eventual structural failure. Where there is a clear violation, the law must take its course,” Wike said.
The minister said the local community would be consulted on a public-purpose project for the reclaimed land and stressed the need for strict compliance with building regulations to ensure safety.
The collapse injured five workers, with another trapped and later rescued. FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed that 17 workers were on the upper floor when the building gave way. Rescue operations involved FEMD, NEMA, FCDA, NSCDC, Fire Service, and FCT Police Command.
Wike directed agencies to strengthen enforcement, including demolition of unapproved structures, warning developers to adhere strictly to procedures.
