The Federal Government has issued a warning that parts of 10 states could experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between April 8 and April 12, 2026.
This advisory came from the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment. In a statement dated April 8 and signed by Usman Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the agency highlighted areas at risk during the forecast period.
According to the notice, several communities across Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states may face intense rainfall that could result in flooding.
Locations identified include Afikpo and Nkalagu (Ebonyi); Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, and Onitsha (Anambra); Ayetoro and Ilaro (Ogun); Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro (Taraba); as well as Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi (Cross River).
Other at-risk areas are Igumale (Benue); Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, and Owerri (Imo); Oko Anara (Delta); Port Harcourt (Rivers); and Umuahia (Abia).
The ministry stressed that both these locations and nearby communities could be affected by flooding within the forecast window.
This warning follows earlier advisories from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Federal Government cautioning farmers against early planting due to misleading early rains earlier in the year. Similarly, the Lagos State Government had urged residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash floods as the rainy season approaches.
Authorities are now calling on relevant stakeholders and residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions.
