The Federal Government has introduced new infrastructure projects valued at about N487.56bn into the revised 2026 budget, reflecting a stronger commitment to expanding the country’s rail and transport systems beyond earlier plans.
These nine projects—mainly focused on light rail and key transport corridors—were not included in the original 2025 budget proposal submitted to the National Assembly but later appeared in the approved 2026 Appropriation Bill and supporting budget documents.
Leading the new allocations is the Lagos Green Line project, which received N170bn as counterpart funding under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Programme. Other major projects include N125bn for the Kaduna Light Rail, N120bn for Kano Light Rail, and N50bn for Ogun State Light Rail, indicating a coordinated effort to improve urban transit in major economic centres.
The government also set aside smaller amounts for feasibility studies, including N4bn each for proposed light rail systems in Enugu and Maiduguri, and N5.6bn for a nationwide narrow-gauge rail assessment. Additionally, N8.96bn was earmarked for studies on the Calabar–Maiduguri corridor and the Maiduguri–Sokoto superhighway, highlighting plans to strengthen connectivity between regions.
Originally presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 19, 2025, with a total size of N58.18tn, the 2026 budget has since expanded significantly—particularly in capital spending and legacy obligations.
Beyond infrastructure, N482.76bn was allocated as counterpart funding for a Nigeria–United States health sector agreement, while N3.5tn was earmarked to settle outstanding 2025 obligations, a move expected to ease financial pressure on contractors and agencies.
Sectoral allocations show increased funding across key ministries. The Ministry of Works received N3.17tn in capital allocation (up from N3.06tn), alongside N48.1bn for recurrent spending. Agriculture got N3.26tn, Innovation, Science and Technology N1.83tn, and Health N1.23tn—reflecting priorities in food security, innovation, and healthcare.
Other allocations include N655.82bn for education, N643.36bn for labour and employment, and N625.30bn for finance. In infrastructure-related sectors, power received N434.67bn, transportation N423.03bn, and water resources N582.35bn. The Federal Capital Territory was allocated N460.74bn for development projects.
Smaller allocations went to regulatory bodies, including N748.4m for the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and N848.04m for the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.
Key government institutions also received notable funding, with the Presidency allocated N147.86bn and the Office of the National Security Adviser N286.90bn, underscoring continued attention to governance and security.
