The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise will now take place after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was revealed in a statement issued on Friday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, following a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
According to INEC, the proposed exercise was reviewed during the meeting, with the Commission ultimately resolving to shift it until after the 2027 elections.
Despite the postponement, INEC emphasized that the revalidation exercise remains a crucial part of its responsibility to maintain an accurate and credible National Register of Voters. The process is intended to verify voter records, correct personal information, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and enhance the overall integrity of the register.
It also provides registered voters the opportunity to confirm and update their details where necessary.
The exercise was initially scheduled to run from April 13 to May 19, 2026, in phases across local governments, wards, and polling units nationwide.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, noting that the adjustment is aimed at ensuring proper preparation ahead of the 2027 polls.
Meanwhile, Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will continue from April 2026 through January 2027, alongside the deployment of technologies such as BVAS and a hybrid results transmission system.
The 2027 general elections are slated for January 16 (Presidential and National Assembly) and February 6 (Governorship and State Assembly).
