The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied allegations that it copied a press statement reportedly first issued by Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on New Media.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the Commission described the claims as “fake, misleading, and a misrepresentation of facts,” insisting that its communication was independently issued and not influenced by any external individual or office.
The controversy arose after INEC reposted a statement clarifying reports that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, had endorsed a partisan message on social media. Critics alleged that the wording of INEC’s statement closely mirrored one earlier circulated online by the presidential aide, sparking questions about originality and institutional independence.
However, INEC maintained that its repost was only intended to amplify an earlier official clarification and should not be interpreted as coordination with any political actor or office.
Reaffirming its neutrality, the Commission stressed that it remains strictly non-partisan and urged the public to disregard what it called misleading interpretations of its actions. It also advised Nigerians to rely only on verified official communication channels for accurate updates.
