Sunderland secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, further deepening Spurs’ relegation concerns in a tense Premier League encounter.
The defeat marked another setback for Tottenham under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who failed to inspire a turnaround in his first match in charge. Despite early promise and a VAR-overturned penalty decision, Spurs were unable to find the breakthrough.
Sunderland took the lead in the second half through a deflected effort from Nordi Mukiele, with the ball looping past the Tottenham goalkeeper after a decisive deflection off Micky van de Ven.
Tottenham pushed for an equaliser late on, but Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced a crucial stoppage-time save to preserve the win.
The result leaves Spurs lingering in the relegation zone, without a league win since December and facing the real threat of an unprecedented drop from the Premier League.
