The Nigerian Armed Forces has confirmed the death of a commanding officer and six soldiers following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Monguno, Borno State.
The incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, came under attack at the Charlie 13 location.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle and successfully repelled the assault, forcing the attackers to retreat while maintaining control of the area.
However, tragedy struck shortly after the encounter when the commanding officer, who had advanced to the frontline to assess the situation, ran into an IED. The explosion destroyed his vehicle, killing him and six other personnel.
The military described the officer’s actions as a reflection of exceptional leadership, noting his courage, selflessness, and commitment to leading from the front even after the immediate threat had been neutralised.
Operation HADIN KAI said it deeply mourns the loss of the fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifice as one that will remain etched in the memory of the nation.
Despite the loss, the military confirmed that troops remain in firm control of the area.
