A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has died after armed robbers attacked his team bus while returning from an away fixture, the Ghana Football Association confirmed on Monday.
According to his club, Berekum Chelsea FC, masked gunmen wielding assault rifles opened fire on the team bus, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
Police reports indicate that Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the напад and later died in hospital while receiving treatment. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of 4,500 cedis.
Describing the incident as tragic, the Ghana Football Association said Frimpong’s death is a huge loss not only to his club but to Ghanaian football as a whole.
The 20-year-old forward had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars and made 13 appearances, scoring two goals.
