Mikel Arteta has praised his side’s resilience after Arsenal booked a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, insisting the achievement reflects the team’s mental strength amid a challenging run of form.
Arsenal progressed past Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, securing a narrow 1-0 aggregate win after a tense goalless draw in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite a below-par performance, with Sporting coming close through Geny Catamo’s first-half effort that struck the post, the Gunners held firm to advance.
The result comes during a difficult spell for Arsenal, who have lost three of their last five matches in all competitions, prompting scrutiny of their consistency and mentality.
However, Arteta defended his squad, stressing that their ability to secure results under pressure demonstrates their character and determination to compete for major honours.
He acknowledged the challenges faced, including several key injuries to players such as Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Jurrien Timber, but praised the collective effort that carried the team through.
Arteta also singled out Declan Rice for playing through illness, describing his performance as a symbol of leadership and commitment within the squad.
Arsenal’s qualification marks the first time in their history they have reached back-to-back Champions League semi-finals. They will face Atletico Madrid, with the first leg scheduled for April 29 in Spain and the return leg on May 5 in London.
The Arsenal boss described the achievement as a major milestone, noting the progress the club has made in recent years as they continue to compete for both European and domestic honours.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that the Champions League success would provide a morale boost ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Arsenal remain in contention for their first league title in 22 years while also chasing their maiden Champions League crown.
