EU Announces €235m Humanitarian Aid Package for Nigeria and West, Central Africa

The European Union has announced €235 million in humanitarian assistance to address escalating crises affecting vulnerable populations across West and Central Africa, including Nigeria.

According to the European Commission, the funding is aimed at supporting people impacted by ongoing conflicts, food insecurity, displacement, and climate-related shocks, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.

Nigeria is expected to receive €33 million from the total package, which also allocates funds to other crisis-hit countries in the region, including the Central Sahel, Chad, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic, among others.

EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, described the region as being overwhelmed by overlapping humanitarian challenges driven by conflict, poverty, instability, and environmental pressures.

She noted that humanitarian aid remains critical for millions of people, providing essential support such as food, clean water, healthcare, and shelter, while also restoring access to education for displaced children.

The EU stressed that many of the crises are concentrated in the Central Sahel and Lake Chad regions, with spillover effects extending into neighbouring coastal states, including parts of Nigeria.

The bloc reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting affected populations through coordinated humanitarian interventions aimed at saving lives and easing suffering across the region.
