Major opposition parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
This resolution was contained in a communiqué issued after a national summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where party leaders committed to forming a united front ahead of the polls. The communiqué, signed by chairmen of participating parties, emphasized that the proposed candidate would be jointly selected and backed to challenge the ruling party and address pressing national concerns.
The opposition also expressed distrust in the leadership of the electoral body, alleging bias and calling for reforms to ensure neutrality in the electoral process. They urged the National Assembly to revisit provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 deemed unfavorable to credible elections and called for an extension of the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.
Additionally, the parties demanded the release of politicians reportedly detained over bailable offences, stressing the importance of protecting fundamental rights. They also commended Nigerians for their resilience and continued support for efforts aimed at strengthening democracy and governance.
