The highly anticipated biopic Michael has debuted at number one at the North American box office, raking in an impressive $97 million over the weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the film chronicles the life and career of Michael Jackson—from his early days as a child star to global superstardom. The lead role is played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson.
Industry analysts have described the opening as record-breaking for a musical biopic, with strong audience reception driven by nostalgia. However, critics have offered mixed reviews, noting that the film largely avoids addressing the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life.
Globally, the film has already grossed nearly $220 million, with a sequel reportedly in development.
Elsewhere at the box office, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie took second place, while Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, secured third.
Other films in the top five include The Mummy and The Drama, featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.
