Sierra Leone has hosted the 27th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Health Ministers of ECOWAS, bringing together health ministers, regional leaders, and technical partners to strengthen efforts toward malaria elimination in West Africa.
The high-level meeting, organised by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Sierra Leone, focused on advancing a coordinated regional strategy under the theme: “Advancing Malaria Elimination Through an Integrated Regional Strategy.”
Representing the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Mr Julius Maada Bio, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh emphasized the importance of measurable outcomes and stronger health systems to transition from malaria control to elimination.
Health Minister Austin Demby also highlighted the need for increased domestic investment, innovation, and resilient health systems in response to stalled global progress, climate change impacts, and reduced external funding.
The summit reinforces renewed regional commitment to making health a central pillar of sustainable development across West Africa.
