A California man accused of storming a gala attended by Donald Trump is expected to appear in court today following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly attempted to target the president and senior officials during the high-profile event held at the Washington Hilton. The situation prompted a swift response from Secret Service agents, who evacuated Trump from the ballroom after gunfire was reported on a nearby floor.
The suspect was apprehended after a brief exchange with security operatives. Officials revealed that he was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives. One officer was injured but is expected to recover.
According to acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche, the suspect is not actively cooperating but is expected to face federal charges. Preliminary investigations suggest he may have been targeting members of the administration, though his exact motive remains unclear.
The incident caused panic among attendees, including top government officials, lawmakers, and members of the media, many of whom reportedly took cover under tables as security agents secured the venue.
This marks another alarming episode in a series of threats against Trump, following previous assassination attempts in recent years. Authorities believe the suspect may have acted alone, though investigations are ongoing.
The annual dinner, organised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, is a major event that brings together political leaders and journalists to celebrate press freedom and raise funds for scholarships.
