The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 28 for the hearing of a suit seeking to compel the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to reopen its investigation into the death of popular musician Mohbad.
The case is being heard by Justice James Omotosho, who ordered that hearing notices be served on the Inspector General of Police, the NPF, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command.
The suit was filed by a non-governmental organisation, the Break the Silence Foundation, which had earlier secured the court’s permission to apply for an order of mandamus. The group is seeking to compel the police to carry out a thorough and impartial reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death in Lagos in September 2023.
According to the application, the court is being urged to direct the police to invite individuals who were last seen with the late singer—including his wife, Omowumi Cynthia Aloba, close associates, and his father, Joseph Aloba. It also calls for the arrest and prosecution of any persons found to be directly or indirectly responsible, where evidence supports such action.
Justice Omotosho also approved substituted service on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police through the NPF Legal Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
At the resumed proceedings, the applicant’s legal team, led by Chief Tunde Falola, confirmed that all respondents had been duly served.
The case has drawn significant public attention following widespread outrage over the circumstances of Mohbad’s death, with many Nigerians calling for justice under the #Justice4Mohbad movement.
