ABUJA — The Federal Government has called for a thorough investigation and full autopsy reports following the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa, amid growing diplomatic concern over attacks on Nigerians abroad.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government is demanding urgent clarification and accountability from South African authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths, which have raised tension within the Nigerian community in the country.
The ministry disclosed that Nigeria is insisting on access to post-mortem reports, case files, and all relevant investigative documents to ensure transparency and proper legal review of the incidents. It also stressed the need for swift and impartial investigations into the deaths.
Officials noted that the Nigerian mission in South Africa is closely monitoring developments while engaging with local authorities to ensure that the rights of Nigerian citizens are protected.
The government further urged South Africa to ensure that any individuals found culpable are held accountable, including through appropriate disciplinary and prosecutorial measures.
The development comes amid rising concerns over xenophobic tensions and reported attacks on foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, prompting Nigeria to intensify diplomatic engagement and citizen protection efforts.
Nigeria has also called for improved cooperation between both countries, including stronger early-warning mechanisms to prevent future incidents and protect vulnerable migrants.
