ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the exit of former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from its political alignment as both a setback and a moment of relief, saying the development reflects deeper issues within Nigeria’s democratic space.
The party said the decision by the politicians was not driven by anger, personal ambition, or convenience, but followed what it described as deep reflection on the state of the nation and the urgent need for national rescue.
According to the ADC, the exits mirror earlier political realignments, including Obi’s departure from the Labour Party, which it said were influenced by similar concerns about internal crises and the political environment.
The party further alleged a recurring pattern of “orchestrated litigation” and internal party conflicts allegedly designed to frustrate certain political actors and limit their participation in the electoral process.
It warned that democracy must not be used as a tool against the people, stressing that opposition parties must remain strong and functional to maintain balance in the political system.
The ADC added that when opposition structures are weakened or destabilised, the consequences ultimately fall on citizens, as democratic accountability is reduced.
It reaffirmed its commitment to political reforms and called for a more stable and inclusive democratic process that allows fair participation for all stakeholders.
