Proceedings in the Nigerian Senate were temporarily halted on Tuesday following a heated exchange between Senator Adams Oshiomhole and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which disrupted plenary for over 15 minutes.
The tension began as Akpabio read the Votes and Proceedings from the previous session. During deliberations on a section concerning the South Africa debate, Oshiomhole raised a point of order but was overruled by the Senate President, who cited the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended).
The disagreement intensified when the chamber moved to consider amendments to the Senate Standing Rules. Oshiomhole again attempted to raise a point of order, insisting on being heard despite procedural objections.
Several lawmakers, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, backed the Senate President, emphasizing that points of order were not permissible at that stage of proceedings. The Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, also cautioned Oshiomhole to adhere to the rules or risk disciplinary action.
A visibly firm Akpabio warned that any further disorderly conduct would attract sanctions, stating that the Senate would enforce its rules if necessary.
Calm was eventually restored, allowing the Senate to proceed with adopting the Votes and Proceedings. The motion was moved by Senator Adamu Aliero and seconded by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro.
