The National Information Technology Development Agency has issued a cybersecurity warning over a dangerous artificial intelligence-powered malware known as DeepLoad, which is reportedly targeting government agencies, financial institutions, businesses, and individuals across Nigeria.
According to the agency’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team, the malware uses advanced AI techniques to steal sensitive information while evading detection by traditional antivirus systems.
NITDA disclosed that DeepLoad spreads mainly through fake website error messages designed to trick users into copying and executing malicious commands on their devices.
Once activated, the malware reportedly installs itself silently, steals stored credentials and sensitive browser data, and uses artificial intelligence to remain hidden from security software.
The agency also warned that the malware contains a hidden persistence mechanism capable of reactivating the infection even after users believe it has been removed.
Officials described the threat as severe and actively targeting Nigerian entities, urging immediate preventive measures by organisations and individuals.
According to NITDA, a successful DeepLoad attack could expose victims to:
- Theft of banking credentials and passwords
- Identity theft and financial fraud
- Compromise of government and corporate data
- Operational disruptions and system shutdowns
To stay protected, the agency advised Nigerians to:
- Avoid copying commands from suspicious websites
- Refrain from installing software from unknown USB devices
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
- Avoid saving banking passwords in browsers
- Scan external devices before use
- Monitor systems for suspicious activities
Organisations were also urged to strengthen staff awareness, block malicious domains, and immediately isolate infected systems to prevent wider damage.
NITDA advised that suspected incidents should be reported quickly, with compromised devices disconnected from the internet and passwords changed from secure systems.
