The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, has resigned from the party as political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1 in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos.
In the letter, he said his resignation takes immediate effect and explained that his decision was driven by the need for a “broader national realignment of the opposition.”
The former NNPP spokesperson thanked the party leadership for the opportunity to serve, particularly in his previous roles as National Auditor and National Publicity Secretary.
According to Johnson, the current political climate in Nigeria demands stronger opposition unity aimed at serving the country’s broader national interest.
Although he did not officially disclose his next political destination, sources within the NNPP indicated that he may join the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and other Kwankwasiyya movement leaders.
The development comes shortly after Peter Obi and Kwankwaso reportedly aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress in a move aimed at building a stronger and more united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers believe the latest defections may reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape as parties and political figures intensify strategic alliances before the next general election.
