Nigerian Airline suspends some routes over rising aviation fuel costs

Rano Air has announced the temporary suspension of some of its flight routes following a sharp increase in the cost of Jet A1 aviation fuel.

In a statement shared on its X platform, the airline said the price of aviation fuel has risen by more than 300 per cent, making operations on certain routes commercially unsustainable.

Although the airline did not officially disclose the affected destinations, sources indicated that routes such as Maiduguri and Gombe could be among those facing temporary suspension.

Rano Air currently operates flights across Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, and Osubi.

According to the airline, the rising fuel cost has placed significant pressure on flight operations, forcing management to make what it described as a difficult but necessary decision to maintain safe and sustainable services.

Passengers affected by the route suspensions were advised to contact the airline for refunds, rescheduling, or rerouting arrangements.

The development comes amid growing concerns within Nigeria’s aviation sector over soaring Jet A1 prices, with domestic airlines warning that the situation could disrupt operations nationwide.

Despite recent intervention by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to peg aviation fuel prices, airlines say fuel costs remain extremely high due to global oil supply disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis.
