The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University chapter, has threatened to embark on another industrial action if the Kaduna State University (KASU) management and government fail to meet its outstanding demands before the end of May 2026.
Speaking on behalf of the union, ASUU media committee member, Dr. Usman Sadiq, said several agreements reached with the government after the suspension of the union’s last strike remain unfulfilled.
According to him, lecturers are becoming increasingly frustrated over the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government, which he noted has already been adopted by several northern state governments.
Sadiq also decried the continued delay in the payment of promotion arrears, revealing that many lecturers who earned promotions as far back as three years ago are yet to receive salary adjustments reflecting their new ranks.
He further criticised the university’s bureaucratic operational structure, saying the institution now requires external approvals for several routine activities, a development he described as slowing down academic and administrative efficiency.
The ASUU official lamented the declining welfare of lecturers, stating that economic hardship and poor motivation have forced many experienced academics to leave the institution, while others are considering resigning.
He added that the situation has become so severe that many professors can no longer afford to drive to work regularly.
Despite the grievances, the union acknowledged the Kaduna State Government for paying previously withheld salaries, describing it as a positive step.
However, ASUU warned that if no concrete action is taken before the end of May, lecturers may be left with no option but to resume strike action.
