Italian giants Inter Milan sealed a remarkable domestic double after defeating Lazio 2-0 in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday night in Rome.
An unfortunate own goal by Adam Marusic and a composed finish from Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez handed Inter a comfortable first-half advantage and ultimately secured the club’s 10th Italian Cup title, adding to their 21st Serie A crown this season.
Inter manager Cristian Chivu praised his team’s consistency and determination throughout the campaign.
“We deserved the trophies after a good season. Winning the league and cup is never something you can take for granted,” Chivu said after the victory.
The final, played at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, saw Inter dominate from start to finish, with Lazio struggling to create meaningful chances despite strong support from their fans.
The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Marcus Thuram’s header from a Federico Dimarco corner deflected into the net off Marusic. Inter doubled their lead in the 35th minute after Denzel Dumfries capitalised on a defensive error before setting up Martinez for a simple tap-in.
Martinez, who battled injuries during parts of the season, celebrated his 22nd goal across all competitions this term.
For Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri, the defeat marked another setback in a difficult season overshadowed by fan unrest directed at club owner Claudio Lotito.
Despite Lazio supporters returning in large numbers for the final, frustrations boiled over late in the match as chants against the club hierarchy echoed around the stadium.
Inter comfortably managed the second half and cruised to the final whistle before lifting yet another major trophy in a memorable campaign.
