Nigeria’s sprint hurdles queen Tobi Amusan has secured the country’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Ghana after winning the women’s 100m hurdles final in dominant fashion.
The former world champion and world record holder delivered another commanding performance on Wednesday, having already posted the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing victory in the final.
Fellow Nigerian hurdler Adaobi Tabugbo also impressed by claiming bronze, earning her first individual medal for Nigeria, while Ashley Miller finished second to deny Nigeria a clean sweep in the event.
Organisers were yet to officially release the final race times due to ongoing technical issues affecting the championships, including problems with the timing system, incomplete results, and inconsistent officiating decisions.
Amusan’s gold medal pushes Nigeria’s total medal haul to four as the country continues its campaign at the continental championship.
Earlier in the competition, Divine Oladipo won silver in the women’s discus event during her first international outing for Nigeria after switching allegiance from Great Britain, while Obiageri Amaechi secured bronze to complete Nigeria’s podium finish in the event.
The championships continue with more finals, including the men’s and women’s 100m events later in the day.
