INEC leads Peace Accord signing, declares readiness for Ekiti 2026 governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct a peaceful, credible, free, and fair governorship election in Ekiti State ahead of the June 20, 2026 off-cycle poll.

This followed the signing of a Peace Accord by political parties and governorship candidates during Day Two of INEC’s readiness assessment visit to the state.

The event, organised under the platform of the National Peace Committee, brought together political parties, candidates, security agencies, observer groups, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, INEC Chairman, Joash Ojo Amupitan, described the Peace Accord as a vital democratic instrument aimed at promoting non-violence and electoral stability.

According to him, the commission has already completed seven out of the nine scheduled electoral activities ahead of the election, leaving only the end of campaigns on June 18 and the governorship poll on June 20.

Prof. Amupitan also disclosed that 1,059,360 registered voters are expected to participate in the election, while 98 observer groups — including 96 domestic and two international organisations — have been accredited to monitor the process.

He stressed that INEC remains committed to neutrality and lawful conduct throughout the election period.

The INEC chairman further warned against vote-buying, voter intimidation, and electoral violence, insisting that any attempt to compromise the democratic process would not be tolerated.

Representing former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Abdulsalami Abubakar, retired General Martin Luther Agwai urged political actors to reject violence and uphold peace before, during, and after the election.

Also speaking, Matthew Hassan Kukah commended stakeholders for sustaining democratic dialogue and responsibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.
