The race for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress intensified on Monday as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen contested in the party’s nationwide direct primary election ahead of the 2027 polls.
Voting commenced simultaneously across the country’s 8,809 wards using the Option A4 system, with party members openly queuing behind their preferred aspirants.
The exercise is seen as a major step for the ADC as the opposition party seeks to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku cast his vote at Ajiya Ward in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, while Amaechi voted in Ward 5, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State alongside supporters and party loyalists.
The contest is expected to shape the party’s strategy as it positions itself to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election.
