The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest in the 2027 general elections.
Justice Peter Lifu made the declaration while delivering judgment in a suit seeking to bar Jonathan from participating in future presidential elections on the grounds that he had previously taken the oath of office twice as president.
The court, however, dismissed the suit, describing it as an abuse of court process.
Justice Lifu noted that the matter had already been addressed by higher courts, adding that he was bound by earlier decisions of the Court of Appeal affirming Jonathan’s eligibility.
He further stated that the suit was a waste of judicial time.
The court also awarded costs against the plaintiff, ordering payment of ₦20 million in favour of Jonathan and ₦1 million in favour of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
