CAN urges FG to prioritise protection of schools, children amid rising insecurity

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently prioritise the protection of schools and children across the country, following rising cases of insecurity and recent attacks on educational institutions.

In a statement issued by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association expressed deep concern over the safety of Nigerian children as the nation marked Children’s Day 2026.

CAN noted that recent attacks in parts of Oyo State, where pupils and teachers were reportedly abducted, have further heightened public anxiety and raised serious questions about the safety of schools nationwide.

The Christian body described the situation as distressing, stressing that no child should be subjected to fear or violence in an environment meant for learning, protection, and hope.

It also lamented the plight of abducted children and the emotional trauma faced by their families, calling for urgent efforts to secure their safe return.

CAN emphasised the critical role of teachers in nurturing and protecting children, noting that they often serve as “second parents” and deserve a safe environment to carry out their duties.

The association warned that continued insecurity in schools poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s future, stating that a nation where parents fear sending their children to school cannot claim to be securing its development.

It further urged collaboration among government institutions, faith leaders, traditional rulers, communities, and the media to strengthen child protection and promote moral values.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies that safeguard the welfare, dignity, and future of Nigerian children, while encouraging children living in difficult conditions not to lose hope, assuring them that their lives and dreams remain valuable.
