Sinner crashes out of French Open after five-set drama

World number one Jannik Sinner suffered a shocking second-round exit at the French Open after collapsing physically in the Paris heat during a dramatic five-set defeat to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Sinner’s remarkable 30-match winning streak came to an abrupt end after the Italian lost 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The top seed appeared in complete control of the match, leading by two sets and 5-1 in the third set before suddenly struggling physically under the sweltering 32-degree conditions.

Sinner reportedly complained of dizziness and nausea, took a medical timeout, and briefly left the court for treatment after losing 18 consecutive points.

Despite returning to continue the match, the Italian star was visibly hampered by cramping and movement issues as Cerundolo staged a stunning comeback to secure one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

“I was a little bit lucky. I feel sorry for him,” Cerundolo said after the match. “I don’t know what happened, but I hope he recovers quickly.”

The defeat marks Sinner’s earliest Grand Slam exit since the 2023 French Open and ends a dominant run that included titles in Rome, Madrid, Monte Carlo, Miami, and Indian Wells.

The extreme heat in Paris has caused difficulties for several players during the tournament, with concerns growing over match scheduling and player welfare.

Cerundolo’s victory sends the Argentine into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
