NSIB launches investigation into Bonny Vessel collision

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a full-scale investigation into the collision between a container vessel and an oil tanker at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State, describing the incident as a “very serious marine casualty.”

The accident, which occurred on May 20, 2026, prompted an immediate emergency response from the agency, which activated its marine safety protocols and deployed a specialised investigative team to Onne and Bonny for preliminary findings.

According to the NSIB, investigators have already boarded both vessels, conducted interviews with crew members, and secured key operational documents and navigational records relevant to the incident.

The bureau also confirmed the retrieval of critical data from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) of MV Maersk Valparaiso for detailed forensic analysis.

In line with international maritime safety standards, the NSIB has notified Singapore’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau, with collaborative efforts now underway with relevant local and foreign stakeholders.

The agency stressed that the investigation will be conducted independently and professionally to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collision, with a focus on improving maritime safety and preventing future incidents.

However, the bureau cautioned the public and stakeholders against speculation, warning that it is too early to draw conclusions about the cause of the accident.

It added that any urgent safety risks identified during the probe would be addressed immediately through interim safety recommendations.

A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation in accordance with national and international maritime regulations.
