WHO confirms first Ebola recovery in DR Congo outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the first confirmed recovery of an Ebola patient in the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to WHO officials, the patient was discharged on May 27 after receiving two consecutive negative test results, marking a significant milestone in efforts to contain the deadly Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

The current outbreak, officially declared on May 15, has so far recorded 125 confirmed cases, more than 900 suspected cases, 17 confirmed deaths, and 223 suspected deaths in the DRC.

Health authorities noted that no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists for the Bundibugyo strain, which can have a fatality rate of up to 50 percent. However, officials say the current outbreak appears to have a mortality rate below 25 percent so far.

WHO also emphasized that early detection and access to medical care significantly improve survival chances, expressing optimism that more patients will recover in the coming weeks.
