Tinubu unveils major CNG infrastructure projects in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri to drive clean energy transition

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned four major Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure projects across Lagos, Abuja and Owerri, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to reducing transportation costs, expanding domestic gas utilisation and accelerating Nigeria’s transition to cleaner and more affordable energy.

The projects, delivered under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF), were unveiled as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration and represent a significant milestone in Nigeria’s post-subsidy energy reform agenda.

At Ojota, Lagos, the President commissioned the Portland Gas CNG Mother Station, a high-capacity facility designed to strengthen gas distribution across the country. He also inaugurated the IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC) CNG Refuelling Station, the flagship project of a network of 15 CNG stations being developed across strategic locations in Lagos State.

In Abuja’s Jahi District, Tinubu commissioned what has been described as West Africa’s most advanced CNG Daughter Booster Station. Developed through a partnership between Rolling Energy Limited and MDGIF, the facility is capable of serving up to 1,000 vehicles daily and includes a dedicated vehicle conversion centre to support motorists transitioning from petrol to gas-powered transportation.

The fourth project, located at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), is the FEMADEC CNG Daughter Station and Conversion Centre. The facility forms part of the Federal Government’s nationwide 20-University CNG Ecosystem Initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs for students and staff while promoting clean energy adoption on campuses.

Speaking during the virtual commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu declared that Nigeria’s energy future would be built on its vast natural gas resources rather than imported alternatives.

“Nigeria is a gas nation. Our energy future will not be borrowed; it will be built from what we have. These projects demonstrate that our gas reform agenda is moving from policy to practical impact,” the President stated.

To further encourage public adoption of CNG, the Federal Government has partnered with financial institutions to provide affordable vehicle conversion financing, allowing motorists and transport operators to switch to gas-powered vehicles through flexible repayment plans.

Officials say the projects align with Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative and are expected to boost energy security, lower transportation costs, create jobs, support cleaner mobility and drive economic growth across the country.
