NSCDC arraigns 15 Chinese nationals, nine Nigerians over alleged illegal lithium mining

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have arraigned 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State.

The defendants were brought before Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, following their arrest on May 16, 2026.

According to the NSCDC, the suspects were allegedly engaged in unlawful lithium mining operations in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State without the required licences or legal authorisation.

The corps stated that the alleged activities took place within an area covered by Exploration Licence No. 036528-EL, reportedly owned by TIMADIX Geomin Consult Ltd.

Authorities further alleged that the mining operations were conducted within a protected mineral title area, prompting the intervention of the NSCDC Mining Marshals.

The case underscores ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to combat illegal mining, protect Nigeria’s mineral resources, and enforce compliance with mining regulations.

Following the arraignment, the court adjourned proceedings and fixed June 18, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
