Lagos summons waste operators over irregular refuse collection complaints

The Lagos State Government has directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority to urgently meet with Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators following increasing complaints from residents over irregular refuse collection across parts of the state.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the intervention became necessary after reports of inconsistent waste evacuation services, particularly in densely populated communities within Alimosho Local Government Area.

According to the commissioner, the meeting is expected to identify and resolve operational challenges affecting waste collection and ensure improved service delivery to residents.

Wahab noted that the directive aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and sustain the momentum of the recently revived monthly sanitation exercise. He expressed satisfaction with the level of public participation recorded since the programme’s reintroduction after nearly a decade-long suspension.

Speaking after monitoring the May sanitation exercise in Orisumbare and Shasha communities in Alimosho, alongside the wife of the governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the commissioner said residents demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental cleanliness despite the recent Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

He also commended the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Johnson Akinpelumi, for deploying additional compactor trucks to support waste evacuation efforts, describing the move as a model of effective collaboration between local councils and the state government.

Wahab further disclosed that the planned reward scheme for the cleanest local government area remains on track, with performance assessments currently underway. He added that reports from monitoring teams across the state indicate that compliance with environmental sanitation directives is steadily improving.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advocacy, enforcement and stakeholder engagement to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all Lagos residents, while urging citizens to continue embracing responsible waste disposal practices.
