Nigeria Advances Health Innovation Agenda as WIPO Opens First Sub-Saharan Africa External Office

Nigeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its health innovation ecosystem following the opening of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s first External Office in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The development was marked by the participation of Dr. Pavel Ursu, who joined the United Nations Country Team as part of efforts to deepen collaboration on innovation, intellectual property, and health-sector advancement.

According to stakeholders, the new WIPO office will expand support for health researchers, local innovators, and young creators across Nigeria, creating opportunities for increased investment in research, innovation, and knowledge-driven development.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s intellectual property ecosystem, helping to accelerate local vaccine and medicine production, promote digital health solutions, and support women- and youth-led health technology enterprises.

The enhanced innovation framework will also provide greater opportunities for researchers, health innovators, and emerging creators to transform ideas into impactful solutions capable of addressing pressing healthcare challenges.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized that it will continue working closely with partners to ensure that advances in innovation and intellectual property contribute meaningfully to improved health outcomes and universal access to quality healthcare.

The move underscores Nigeria’s growing role as a regional hub for innovation and highlights the importance of intellectual property in driving sustainable health and economic development across Africa.
