Obasanjo advocates regular health screening, leads prostate cancer awareness campaign

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerians to prioritise regular medical check-ups and health screenings for the early detection and effective management of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and other non-communicable illnesses.

Obasanjo made the appeal in Abeokuta while flagging off the “Lagos to the World Expedition,” a cancer awareness initiative designed to promote prostate cancer screening and encourage healthier lifestyles among Nigerians.

Speaking at the event held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the former president stressed the importance of preventive healthcare, noting that many serious illnesses can be effectively managed when detected early.

Sharing his personal experience living with diabetes for over four decades, Obasanjo highlighted the role of healthy living in disease management. He encouraged Nigerians, especially senior citizens, to embrace what he described as “DREMS” — Diet, Rest, Exercise, Medical check-ups and Social interactions — as essential pillars of healthy living.

He noted that while some illnesses may not have permanent cures, they can be successfully managed through discipline, regular medical attention and healthy lifestyle choices.

The expedition was organised by entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast Erik Nwagwu in memory of his late mother and sister, both of whom died from cancer. The initiative aims to raise awareness about prostate cancer, particularly among Black men, while promoting routine health screenings.

According to Nwagwu, the campaign will include free prostate cancer tests, blood pressure checks, blood sugar screenings and body mass index assessments in different cities across Africa and beyond. He emphasised that early detection remains one of the most effective tools in the fight against prostate cancer.

The awareness drive is expected to travel through several countries, carrying a message of prevention, early diagnosis and improved healthcare consciousness among men and communities worldwide.
