Federal Government Orders End to Three-Month Retirement Leave

The Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to discontinue the practice of placing civil servants on a mandatory three-month pre-retirement leave, stating that such a provision does not exist in the Public Service Rules.

According to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, retiring officers are required to give three months’ notice, attend a one-month pre-retirement seminar, and complete pension documentation, but must continue performing their official duties until their retirement date unless otherwise authorised.

The directive aims to standardise retirement procedures across the civil service and ensure experienced officers remain productive until their official exit from service.
