Dangote Refinery Eyes Global Jet Fuel Dominance, Plans Capacity Expansion by 2028

Dangote Refinery says it is positioning itself as a major player in the global jet fuel market, with plans to add 700,000 barrels per day of refining capacity by the end of 2028.

Speaking at the S&P Global Energy Middle East Petroleum and Gas Conference in London, Chief Executive David Bird revealed that the refinery currently has a surplus of jet fuel due to lower demand across Africa, enabling it to export competitively to markets around the world.

Bird said the 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery is operating at full capacity and described the expansion as a “ruthless replication” of the existing facility. He added that the company has already procured key equipment and is awarding construction contracts for the project.

The expansion is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global energy market and could eventually raise the group’s refining capacity to 2.1 million barrels per day, with another refinery planned for East Africa.

According to Bird, Nigeria has moved from fuel scarcity to fuel abundance since the Dangote Refinery commenced operations.
