FG Heightens Ebola Alert, Strengthens Border Controls Nationwide

The Federal Government has intensified surveillance and emergency response measures across the country to prevent the possible importation of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), currently reported in parts of East and Central Africa.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said it has activated enhanced preparedness protocols nationwide, including stricter screening procedures at airports, seaports and land borders.

The statement, signed by the Ministry’s Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, Ado Bako, noted that the measures were introduced in response to growing concerns over the potential cross-border spread of the virus.

According to the Ministry, all incoming travellers are now subjected to temperature screening using infrared thermal scanners and handheld thermometers, while health declaration forms, travel history reviews and risk-based assessments are being reinforced at designated points of entry.

The Ministry also disclosed that isolation, secondary screening and referral systems have been strengthened to manage travellers who exhibit symptoms associated with viral haemorrhagic fevers.

It added that collaboration among immigration authorities, aviation agencies, maritime operators and border management institutions has been enhanced to improve early detection, reporting and response capabilities.

Despite the heightened alert, the Federal Government reassured Nigerians that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

As part of broader preparedness efforts, the Ministry said the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system has been strengthened nationwide, alongside expanded community-based and event-based disease surveillance networks.

The government further stated that public health alerts, rumours and suspected cases are being actively monitored and investigated, while continuous epidemiological assessments are being carried out in partnership with regional and international health organisations.

Health authorities urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, observe recommended public health measures and promptly report any suspected symptoms to the nearest healthcare facility.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and preventing the spread of infectious diseases through proactive surveillance, rapid response and inter-agency collaboration.
