The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Lagos State Chapter, has posthumously honoured Kudirat Olayinka Abiola as its Iconic Woman, marking 30 years since her assassination on June 4, 1996.
In a statement, the Chapter Chairperson, Jumoke Johnson, described Kudirat Abiola as a symbol of courage, resilience, and selfless sacrifice whose unwavering commitment to democracy and justice helped shape Nigeria’s political history.
According to Johnson, the recognition serves as a tribute to a woman whose activism and leadership inspired a generation and left an enduring impact on the nation’s democratic journey.
“Chief Kudirat Abiola was more than the wife of MKO Abiola. She was a leading activist, strategist, and fearless voice for justice who stood firm in the face of immense danger,” she said.
Also speaking, the Chapter Secretary, Anu M. Thomas, noted that the Iconic Woman recognition celebrates women whose contributions have transformed society and inspired future generations.
She highlighted Kudirat Abiola’s role in mobilising women, civil society groups, and international stakeholders during the struggle that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, describing her actions as a defining example of courageous leadership.
“Kudirat demonstrated that activism and the pursuit of truth go hand in hand when justice is under threat. Her courage continues to inspire women journalists and advocates across the country,” Thomas stated.
NAWOJ Lagos further called on governments at all levels to preserve Kudirat Abiola’s legacy through policies that protect women human rights defenders, journalists, and democracy advocates. The association also urged media organisations to continue highlighting the contributions of women to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Thirty years after her death, NAWOJ said Kudirat Abiola remains a powerful symbol of conviction, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of courageous leadership.
