Campaigns for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections officially begin on Wednesday, ushering in a crucial phase of political mobilisation as parties and candidates intensify efforts to win voters ahead of the polls.
The campaign season comes months before the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, with the economy, rising cost of living, unemployment, security and governance expected to dominate political debates.
Ahead of the commencement, major political contenders and party representatives signed the National Peace Accord on Tuesday, pledging to promote peaceful, responsible and issue-based campaigns throughout the electoral period.
Those associated with the accord include President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Labour Party candidate Peter Obi; African Action Congress candidate Omoyele Sowore; and Peoples Redemption Party candidate Donald Duke.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to rekindle some of the major political rivalries witnessed during the 2023 elections, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other contenders seek to mount a strong challenge for the presidency.
With many Nigerians still grappling with high living costs, candidates are expected to place their economic plans at the centre of their campaigns. The ruling administration is likely to highlight the objectives and achievements of its economic reforms, while opposition parties are expected to campaign on the immediate challenges facing households and businesses.
The National Peace Accord has also renewed calls for political parties and their supporters to reject violence, hate speech, misinformation, personal attacks and inflammatory statements.
As campaigns begin, voters will be looking closely at the manifestos, records and policy proposals of the various candidates, particularly their plans for the economy, jobs, security, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
The 2027 elections are expected to be a major test of Nigeria’s political landscape, with parties competing to convince voters that they can provide practical solutions to the country’s economic and developmental challenges.
