Nigeria’s ongoing health sector reforms have gained international acclaim, with the country’s Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) model showcased at the 2025 World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. The high-level forum, themed “Scaling Health Reforms,” brought together leaders from the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, health ministers, and global health investors to discuss sustainable health financing, local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and innovations in primary healthcare delivery.

Representing Nigeria, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized the tangible results of the SWAp model, which harmonizes government and donor funding with national health priorities.

He highlighted that in the first half of 2025, revitalized primary healthcare centers funded through the programme saw over 80 million patient visits—quadrupling the figure from the same period in 2023. According to him, this demonstrates the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in expanding access to quality healthcare and boosting economic productivity.
