NEC Committee Visits Lagos Police College as FG Begins Assessment of Security Training Institutions

The National Economic Council (NEC) committee on the renovation of security agencies’ training institutions has commenced its nationwide assessment with a visit to the Police College in Ikeja, Lagos.

The delegation, led by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who chairs the committee, visited the college on Tuesday to inspect its facilities.

Other members of the delegation included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Baba Alkali, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGP) Olatunji Disu.

Background

On October 23, NEC approved President Bola Tinubu’s directive to renovate and upgrade training institutions of all security agencies across the country.

The decision was taken during the 153rd NEC meeting chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.

The committee was mandated to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the institutions and present its report within 30 days.

Assessment Visit

The delegation was received by Commandant Omolara Oloruntola and other senior officers of the college.

Governor Mbah said the committee’s work aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to restoring “the pride, confidence, and professionalism” of Nigeria’s security personnel through better training infrastructure.

“The president recognises that there is a need for bold and urgent steps to restore the pride and boost professionalism among our men and women in uniform,” Mbah said.

He noted that the committee had been divided into two — North and South teams — with Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule leading the northern inspection.

Mbah added that the president’s ongoing recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel demonstrates his drive to strengthen national security and support his vision of building a trillion-dollar economy anchored on peace and investor confidence.

Commandant Oloruntola, while welcoming the committee, highlighted the poor state of infrastructure at the Lagos Police College, including dilapidated dining halls and sporting facilities, and called for urgent upgrades to meet modern policing standards.
