Luis Díaz scored twice and was later sent off as Bayern Munich extended their perfect start to the season with a 2–1 victory over defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
The Colombian winger opened the scoring in the 4th minute and doubled Bayern’s lead just after the half-hour mark, capitalising on a defensive lapse by Marquinhos. However, Díaz’s night turned sour when he received a red card in first-half stoppage time for a reckless tackle that injured PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, who left the pitch in tears.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men — and Harry Kane unable to add to his 25 goals this season — Vincent Kompany’s side held firm. PSG substitute João Neves pulled one back in the 74th minute, but the German champions held on to secure all three points.
The victory means Bayern have now won all 16 games this season in all competitions, scoring 56 goals. They remain one of only two clubs with 12 points from four matches in the 36-team Champions League league phase, alongside Arsenal.
For PSG, the defeat was compounded by mounting injury woes. In addition to Hakimi’s ankle injury, Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, limped off midway through the first half — cutting short just his second start in two months.
Coach Luis Enrique’s side, who triumphed in last season’s Champions League final against Inter Milan, remain well placed to qualify for the knockout rounds, though the injuries could disrupt their momentum.
Tuesday’s clash — a repeat of the 2020 final won by Bayern — showcased the German side’s resilience under Kompany, who has yet to suffer a competitive defeat since taking charge.
Bayern will host PSG in the reverse fixture next month, with PSG now anxiously awaiting medical updates on Hakimi and Dembélé ahead of a demanding domestic and European schedule.
