NIS warns Nigerians against misusing US visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a public advisory calling on Nigerians to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of their U.S. visas, following concerns raised by the United States Government about instances of visa misuse by Nigerian citizens.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized that visa holders must only use their visas for the purposes declared during their application process.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service alerts the public to concerns expressed by the U.S. Government over the improper use of American visas by some Nigerian nationals,” the statement read.

“All holders of U.S. visas are strongly advised to comply with the purpose for which their visas were issued. U.S. authorities conduct additional security checks beyond the point of entry, and any violation of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation.”

He further warned that overstaying or breaching visa conditions could lead to severe consequences, including removal from the U.S. and permanent disqualification from future visa applications.

The statement also addressed Nigerian students in the United States, urging them to remain enrolled and active in their academic programs. Akinlabi cautioned against unauthorized withdrawals or prolonged absenteeism, noting such actions may result in the cancellation of their visas and future travel bans.

Additionally, the NIS highlighted that U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to give birth in the U.S. as a strategy to obtain American citizenship for their children.

The U.S. continues to uphold a secure and transparent visa issuance process and expects full compliance with its immigration rules from all foreign nationals, the statement concluded.
