The National Executive Council (NEC) has approved the allocation of ₦17.5 billion to bolster the country’s preparedness and response to anticipated flooding in 2025.
Out of the total sum, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will receive ₦10 billion specifically to support its flood response operations.
The decision was made during an NEC meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Details were shared via a statement on NEMA’s official X handle.
During the session, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, presented an update on current flood situations across Nigeria and outlined the agency’s preparedness strategy. Her briefing covered risk assessments, early warning systems, and coordinated response plans being developed ahead of the 2025 flood season.
Following deliberations on the urgency of proactive measures, NEC approved the disbursement of funds to enhance flood mitigation efforts nationwide.
According to NEMA, part of the funding includes ₦3 billion allocated to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Additionally, ₦1.5 billion each will go to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
Mrs. Umar affirmed NEMA’s commitment to working collaboratively with state governments, federal ministries, and development partners to deliver a timely, effective, and community-focused response to flood emergencies.
