FG Honours D’Tigress With OON, 100,000 Flat Each

The Federal Government has conferred national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON) on members of D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, following their historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women title.

Each player also received a cash reward of100,000 and a flat, while the technical crew led by Coach Rena Wakama were awarded $50,000 each.

President Bola Tinubu made the announcement during a reception held Monday evening in Abuja, represented by First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Just a week after the Super Falcons were honoured for their WAFCON victory, Nigeria’s D’Tigress have joined the celebration, claiming their seventh AfroBasket title—and a historic fifth in a row—after defeating Mali 78-64 in Sunday’s final.

Despite a slow start, the Nigerian ladies regrouped, drawing level 41–41 at halftime. With Amy Okonkwo scoring 19 points and Ezinne Kalu adding 20, D’Tigress pulled ahead in the third quarter and never looked back. Promise Amukamara, Victoria Macaulay, and Murjanatu Musa also made key contributions.

This latest win extends Nigeria’s AfroBasket unbeaten run to 29 games since 2015, firmly establishing D’Tigress as the most dominant women’s basketball team in Africa.
