2025 WASSCE Results: A Significant Decline in Performance

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). According to the WAEC Head of Nigeria National Office, Amos Dangut, the examination results reveal a concerning trend in academic performance.

Key Statistics:

  • Total Number of Candidates: 1,969,313 candidates sat for the examination across 23,554 recognized secondary schools in Nigeria.
  • Candidates with Special Needs: 12,178 candidates with special needs, including visual and hearing impairments, were fully accommodated during the exams.
  • Gender Distribution: The candidates comprised 976,787 males (49.60%) and 992,526 females (50.40%).

Performance Highlights:

  • Credit and Above in Five Subjects (Including English and Mathematics): Only 38.32% of candidates (754,545 out of 1,969,313) achieved credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This represents a significant decline of 33.8% compared to the 72.12% recorded in 2024.
  • Breakdown by Gender: Among the candidates who obtained credit and above in five subjects (including English and Mathematics), 46.01% (347,192) were male, while 53.99% (407,353) were female.

Results Processing and Malpractice:

  • Fully Processed Results: 1,517,517 candidates (77.06%) had their results fully processed and released.
  • Pending Results: 451,796 candidates (22.94%) had one or more subjects still being processed due to issues under resolution.
  • Exam Malpractice: Results of 192,089 candidates (9.75%) are being withheld pending investigation into alleged examination malpractice.

Future Developments:

  • Computer-Based WASSCE: WAEC is set to rollout computer-based WASSCE for school candidates in 2026, following a partial deployment in 2025 for private candidates.
  • Digital Certificates: Candidates can apply for their digital certificates, which will be available within 48 hours of result release.

Accessing Results:

  • Candidates can access their results online via (link unavailable) using their Smart Identity Cards.

The WAEC has urged indebted state governments to settle their dues to enable affected candidates to access their results.
