Finnish court sentences Simon Ekpa to six years for terrorism offenses

A Finnish district court, Päijät-Häme, has sentenced pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes.

The court found Ekpa guilty of inciting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization. According to Finnish newspaper Yle, the judgment stated that Ekpa used his large social media following to incite violence and unrest in Nigeria’s South-East between August 2021 and November 2024.

The panel of three judges unanimously declared Ekpa a key figure in a militant separatist movement seeking the creation of Biafra from Nigeria. He was also found guilty of supplying weapons, explosives, and ammunition to groups in the region through his contacts.

Further charges included aggravated tax fraud and violating Finland’s Attorneys Act.

Ekpa, a Finland-based lawyer and self-proclaimed disciple of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, was once appointed to lead Radio Biafra broadcasts after Kanu’s extradition in 2021. However, IPOB later disowned him, accusing him of disregarding the organisation’s protocols, leading to the formation of a splinter group under his leadership.
